Description: The “Decorative Hitch” described by Ashley (ABOK # 1687, p 292) is now called the Boom Hitch. It is a strong and secure method of attaching a line, or rope to a fixed object like a pipe, post, or sail boom. The Boom Hitch requires a single tuck and an Overhand Knot and the result is a neat attractive knot.
Tying the Boom Hitch: It is one of the simplest knots to tie as each turn merely wraps on top of the previous turns. The Boom Hitch should, however, be tightened carefully because, on both sides, it is possible to disturb the sequence of the wraps. The wraps should be kept bunched together and any slack should be removed by pulling and wriggling on both ends.
Uses: The Boom Hitch tolerates tension at right angles to the boom and, depending somewhat on the finish on the boom and the type of rope, will also resist a longitudinal pull in either direction.
