To Step use Arrow Keys (). Set Speed using 1 – 5.
Origin: Ashley describes the Farmer’s Loop twice (ABOK #1054 p 191 and #2565, p 412). He writes: “The FARMER’s LOOP is shown by Professor Howard W.Riley in a Cornell reading course pamphlet of 1912, which is devoted to knots employed on the farm. The knot is a good one on all three counts – lead, security, and strength. Moreover, the method of tying it is both ingenious and distinctive, and, once mastered, it is not apt to be forgotten.”
Purpose: The Farmer’s Loop creates a mid-rope loop quickly and conveniently. Strain may applied from the loop to either end or between the two ends.
Tying It: For photography here, the hand was replaced by wood. Ashley describes tying it around the forearm or the hand. For smaller line the Farmer’s Loop could tied around one or two fingers.
Comparison: Although known as a Farmer’s Loop it also has applications in Climbing, Scouting, and Boating. However, the same purpose appears to be achieved better by the more compact Alpine Butterfly Loop which is also easier to tie.
